As with last year, we will be using both Discord and the Runefest 2018 forums to schedule our plans, and our stay. The earlier we know who is coming, the better we can plan ahead, so let us know as soon as possible if you're coming. If you're not sure yet, it can still be helpful to get an indication. You're welcome to let me know in private if you have any plans you're not ready to share yet. If you have any concerns, you can get in touch with myself or a clan councillor.
The new format of Runefest is making things a bit more unpredictable, and many people still have to finalise travel arrangements, so please bear with us while we plan things.
Meanwhile, if you have any specific wishes, please let us know. Also, if you want to design some branded material yourself, get in touch and we'll talk! We're hoping to open a small storefront for all members, and we're happy to add additional items.
RS3 Guild Membership
Instead of working with a guest access system, the RS3 Guild Council decided to make an in-game rank no longer a requirement for being in the RS3 Guild, and of course also by extension Clan Quest. We have wanted to give these people who cannot join our clan in RuneScape for varying reasons a place in our clan ever since the new Constitution, and it makes me happy that we have finally come to an agreement on how to do this. A special welcome to all of you who have joined through this new system.
The decision took a long while to make, because in a way the whole concept of membership had to be reinvited. The final solution has many advantages and provides a template for other guilds. I don't want to take too much fame away from the Guild Council, so I will leave it to them to give a more detailed explanation in the coming days.
The Editors team is always looking for people who are willing to make stuff for the website. A big debate behind the scenes for the last month has been focused around “guests” and their relationship to Clan Quest. It’s brought about multiple questions about how we categorize the users of Clan Quest’s communication channels, and where should the limitation be drawn between who gets what benefits, and who can participate. So what is a member? Let’s take a stroll down memory lane while we think about this question...
A lot of Clan Questers these days weren’t around to realize that the founders of Clan Quest actually came from another community. While we might like to paint ourselves as these brilliant visionaries who saw the potential behind an idea and acted upon it, the reality is that we three had worked with a gaming community centered around the game’s story, and when we opened Clan Quest we did so because we believed our vision for a community to be superior. The consequence of being associated with another community, especially during our initial opening and the few months after, was that we had a lot of people who knew us from the previous group but who were too attached to the previous group to commit to us. When we were founded, we had “members” who weren’t part of Clan Quest officially, but who were easily recognized as part of our community. Membership, especially at the formation of Clan Quest, was an incredibly fluid concept.
As Clan Quest become more established, our members also became significantly more committed. Many of our community is familiar with the RuneScape Clan “Caped Carousers”, but did you know that at one point in Clan Quest’s history, almost 30 people were associated with both organizations at the same time? What changed, were two things. First, the RuneScape game received the Clan Camp update which rendered it impossible for someone to be an official member of two different clans in-game. Second, and more importantly, the people who contributed to Clan Quest did so with great fervor, and the community’s culture developed an expectation of similar care. While before we had allowed people to loosely participate in Clan Quest, we began to expect that the people we care for, and play with, hold us to a similar priority. Ever since, Membership in the Clan has been bound to an expectation of participation and commitment.
I need to state here, that my personal opinion on the question of commitment from membership has changed dramatically, back-and-forth, over the years. At one point, I argued that the benefits of Clan Quest’s communities should be exclussive to its members, and tried to bar guests entirely- I was overwhelmed by the contrary responses from our membership-at-large. Apparently, though there still existed some expectation of our members, an understanding that people not “officially” part of Clan Quest were still part of the family.
Nowadays I look back on the history of things and I see membership in a different light. I’ve come to realize something that I’m not sure others have. At the risk of being accused of scheming, I’ve decided to be transparent and just tell everyone what I know. When leaders and members of other communities get a sampling of Clan Quest, they come here. Certainly, there are people whose interests change, and as a result move onto other commitments with other communities outside our own. But look at the people who were part of communities, and how important they are to us now. Look at how many of our members, after leaving to experience new things, come back. Clan Quest is just that amazing.
“So? What does that matter, Draz?”
Well the truth of this is simple. We’ve designed a standard of expectation for our members, and limited it to a condition within the game of RuneScape. But this is a problem, because Clan Quest CAN BE MORE. We have to change our perspective of membership from being represented solely in a game, and instead understood as membership within a greater community. Why can’t the leaders and members of other communities participate in Clan Quest? It’s worked pretty damn well for us in the past. This magazine was founded by a clan leader of another clan ( Daviddts ). Our Website was built in large part by the leader of another community ( RSBandB / Shane ).
We’ve all come from somewhere. But the binding glue that holds us together, is our community. If we can broaden our understanding of what membership is, maybe we can catch some more people with that glue, especially people who couldn’t even consider joining before.
What happens when the inevitable happens and they fall in love? Well we steal a few new members from other communities.
And as we begin to consider expanding into other games, something important might happen. The people who cannot be an exclusive member of our Runescape Clan Channel, might just become some of our most important members in another guild.
