Bulletin - May 2020

This is Clan Quest:
The last days and weeks have shown me yet again what it means to be part of our Clan Quest family. We’ve seen sporadic events pop up in Discord, events pop up in-game, and overall a good level of community commadrie between members. Why am I mentioning this first? Normally monthly bulletins are a place to run around in circles and tout all of the accomplishments of the clan, and we’ll do this, but this month I first want to pay special attention to the global situation we’ve all found ourselves a part of.

The global COVID-19 pandemic has pushed all of us into new territory, potentially uncomfortable situations, and in some cases has prevented us from seeing loved ones and interacting with the world. Those who know me personally know that I always encourage dialog over dancing around topics. I want to thank Clan Questers on the whole for conducting themselves graciously during this period. And, if you’re ever feeling lonely or want to talk about the situation reach out to one of your Clan Quest family members.

That being said, witnessing the burst of community expression in the RuneScape 3 Guild as a result of the new Archaeology launch has been awe-inspiring. Archaeology is the game’s 28th skill and focuses around lore and discovery. This fits right into the wheel house that is Clan Quest. The RuneScape 3 Guild has also seen new members with the release of Archaeology. Welcome aboard!

May 2020 002.png
Part of the RS3 Guild at Archaeology's release

What else has been going on?
And of course for those reading who aren’t interested in RuneScape 3 or Archaeology, remember that we have an Old School RuneScape Guild and a Rocket League guild if your interests lie in those areas. Some of the great expressions of community we’ve seen over the last month or so have been the events hosted that aren’t reliant on one of our core games. This could mean one-shot D&D sessions or the occasional Jackbox party game hosted in Discord. Don’t forget to check out the #events channel in Discord, where something will almost always be being planned.

Questaholic revamp
But there’s one more thing that I haven’t mentioned yet and without this, there would be no bulletin. I’d like to thank the revamped Questaholic crew for getting the magazine up and running again. The magazine provides a steadying force for Clan Quest and gives members something to look forward to at the end of the month. My interactions with the magazine from being interviewed and learning about members’ passion projects is something that has made Questaholic a must read for myself. When you have a community as large as Clan Quest, is truly a privilege to be able to do so. Thank you!

As I close off my first bulletin I want to thank the Questaholic crew again for requesting a bulletin. It’s a great honour to be able to speak to the whole of Clan Quest. From the Clan Council we say that if there is ever anything that you think could make Clan Quest better, more efficient, or perhaps just more fun don’t hesitate to reach out! We are here to make things happen and facilitate the dreams of our members and various guilds.

With that being said, I’m back to my dig site. See you next month!

As some of you already know, IRDifferent has stepped down as Head of the Old School Guild Council, and thus new elections were held. The councillors chose amongst themselves and came with a great decision! ! As it is customary nowadays, I asked the new Head for a picture and a short speech. Let me present you to...

Francine1225, Head of the Old School Guild Council
May 2020 003.jpg
-I dont like my smile, so here’s a smirk.
Francine, 29/04/2020

Hello Everyone! Francine1225 here! I also have a Ironwoman account - IronFran1225.

I have been a part of the Questing Clan of RuneScape since 2012. I started playing Old school since it came out in February 2013. Then I officially joined the OSRS Guild in November 2018, soon after it was created in October 2018. I became a part of Guild Council almost immediately after still in November 2018. If you are not familiar on who I am, you may know my other half, probably the better half, the one, the only, Sk8r_Dan_Man. Also known as Dan, and my brother, he has made quite a reputation for himself in the clan. He is active in lots of other games than me. My only interest in gaming is OSRS and this clan.
Since the previous head of Guild Council stepped down, I was nominated for the head and I gladly accepted. I never thought I would be this important to a community as awesome as Clan Quest. I have no idea what I got myself into. “With great power comes great responsibility.” I will try my best. Please know I am always active on discord if I am not in game. You can always DM me or tag me and I will see it. I got notifications from my discord app. For more information, I was interviewed in August 2019 and a Featured Member in May 2019 for the Questaholic.
This is my finals week of Junior year of College. I am almost a Senior! I have never thought about what I want my future career to be, so I am making my own degree with concentrations in business, communications, and sociology. I get to choose my classes that interest me in these concentrations and then I will be prepared for any type of job that comes across my life that I may be interested in. You never know what the future holds.

I hope everyone is getting through these hard times in the real world. Stay home as much as possible to stop the spread. Wash your hands to some nostalgic RuneScape music. Play RuneScape with the Clan and get those gains! Stay Healthy and check in on your loved ones.

The shadow editor

Hoods, my fellow avid questaholichers! This is Choto, once again, as you might have already guessed. Three years and seven months ago, I was publishing the first episode of my ramblings on this very same magazine. It was the first solid contribution I made for Questaholic, and, ironically, it's gonna be the last one, at least for some time.

You have already noticed the magazine hasn't been regularly published since August last year, and that has been primarily my fault. Real life has finally gripped me, and, to my shame, I don't want to dedicate the scarce free time I have to the Questaholic.

Having been Editor-in-chef has been the best experience I've had since I joined the clan, only surpassed by my trip to London, where I met a whole bunch of questing noobs. I wanna talk about what we've achieved since that first Noob's ramblings, published in the October 2016 issue.

We managed to pull 35 issues, with 355 unique articles, including 73 interviews to clannies and remarkable people of the RuneScape community. Among those interviews, you can find 4 that go beyond our clan: Meneer Naab, notable f2p celebrity; and Jagex Moderators Raven, Meadows and Breezy.

May 2020 005.png

But stepping aside from the interviews, you'll find a few things that I think gave the magazine a more prominent stand in our clan structure. The most important is the amount of articles that discussed "Non-RS" stuff, like Ozazoyo's and Diana's articles on different games, Cireon's book reviews, Varangian Bard "Bard's College", Cabege's Comic Corner, and more. The personal touch many gave to their own articles made the magazine feel more complete, and the several puns and easter eggs hidden in those walls of text made the read more enjoyable. We have thousands of pictures, an immense amount of "Clan lore", stories of the people that made Clan Quest what it is today. There is no bigger or better database about who we are anywhere else.

There is a gap, however, a horrible gap, if I may say, that I feel highly uncomfortable with. There are 8 issues of Questaholic that never saw the light. Pretty much like the Shadow Government in UK's politics, I will make my way as Shadow Editor and work towards releasing those missing issues. When? I don't know, but someday, that I can promise.

May 2020 006.png

And of course, I can be no shadow anything without someone casting the shadow first. That's the real reason for this Ramblings. A new Head Editor has risen, and I'd very much take the opportunity to present you to....
*Drumrolls for dramatic effect, please...*

EVILPHAN!

Thank you for having stepped up to continue this wonderful work. Thank you for continuing the legacy of those who released the January 2012 magazine. Thank you for giving me one less thing to be stressed about. You are a wonderful noob.

And of course. Thank you all that walked with me for the duration of Questaholic v2. I couldn't name all of you, excepting Sirapyro. You too, Sira, have been a wonderful pal to work with. I couldn't have made anything without your input.

Let 2020 begin, this time, with Questaholic v3.

And, as usual,

Choto out.

SANTA ENDS

Why did you choose the path of law school after your undergrad?
I wanted a career that would allow me to be flexible. I wanted to always be learning knew things because I get bored easily. I figured law school was the best because you need lawyers in every industry.

What are some of the first things you did when you finish a semester's worth of exams?
SLEEP! Like legit sleep for 13 hours for weeks lol.

What do you do to relax when you are stressed out irl?
Eat a lot of sugar. It is a terrible habit I need to stop. Also, by playing RS.

Do you have a favourite food?
Nicaraguan food.

What's your favourite book?
Chicagoland Vampires Series (haha no shame!)

May 2020 008.jpg

What's your first impression of this clan?
I joined so long ago that I honestly do not remember. I probably just thought everyone was funny.

Why did you decide to stay in CQ for years?
Because I always felt welcomed. And also because I always have good laughs with everyone.

Are you a RS player that comes and goes for short but intense bursts or are you the super consistent type?
So for about 8 years I was the former. I would basically only long on during school breaks. But in the last 4 years, I have been more of the super consistent type.

How are you in pvm compared to 5 years ago?
Much better considering I didn't do pvm 5 years ago.

What's your favourite skill, quest cape, and why those?
My favorite skill is DUNGEONEERING. I just love leading a team quickly through a large floor. It is a fun challenge that never gets old for me. Hence, why it is the only skill I have managed to get 200m xp.

May 2020 009.jpg

What's your current item goal if you have one?
I do not have one because I like to hoard all my gp. lol My current goal is to reach 2b on my gp pouch. But with the new skill (arch) being released, I will probably have to spend a lot of my gp soon.

Do you play RS on a laptop, PC or mobile? Do you have a preference?
Laptop. I can't use mobile because I have an iphone.

Will you attend Shane's RSBandB podcast one day if he wants you to?
Sure, but I hate the sound of my voice lol.

What are your thoughts of ever making an ironman?
I feel like I still have so much to accomplish on my main account that I can't even think about making an ironman.

1234WERECOOL

What are some hobbies of yours?
Being so busy with law school, I feel like I have given up on a lot of my hobbies. The only hobby that has managed to survive has been playing RS. But here are some activities I really enjoy and would like to get back to: Country line dancing, tennis, reading fantasy books, and yoga.

Who's your best friend and why is it Pop O?

ISKH

How's the cat?
He is great! I spoil him way too much.

You are very difficult to snoop on. An intro posted in Fri Dec 23, 2011. No keepsake? Are you planning on doing one?
Nope lol. I still don't fully understand the concept.

How can you possibly hate cabbages. I am shocked!
Omg I said that some many years ago lol I do not hate cabbages anymore.

May 2020 010.jpg

Still playing Tennis?
Rarely, but I still love the game and would like to have more time to play.

THE SKEEZER

DO YOU PLAN ON EVER JOINING THE OSRS SIDE OF THINGS? OR STRICTLY RS3?
I think I'll stick with RS3 for a while.

LUKE

Do you prefer me or Choto?
Lol who prefers Choto?

TYCO ELF

What is your earliest Runescape memory?
LOL so it's a bit of a long story but here we go: This is actually the second account I ever made (isarap1). My main account was called isarap. And my earliest memory is actually how I "lost" the original isarap account - So I was a young noob exploring lumbridge. My account was only 14 days old. and on this 14 day I decided to go inside one of the houses next to the old lumbridge mill. I then climbed the stairs in the house just for fun. Next thing I knew, I couldn't find my way out. I could not see the stairs to get out or a door. I also did not know about teleporting. I was stuck and I started to panic! Time went by and I could not figure out how to get out. So I made the executive decision to make a new account and ditch that one. AND that's the story of how isarap1 was born and my earliest memory lol. What really happened that day is that I had not learned to adjust my screen and so I could not see the stairs. Weeks later I realized what had happened, but I was already so far ahead with isarap1 that I just continued on that account and never used isarap again. Years ago Jagex deleted a bunch of accounts that have not been used and that is how I was able to reclaim the name isarap for this account.

How would you describe yourself in Runescape?
A hoarder lol.

What item do you use the most, both in Runescape and in real life?
In real life, my phone. I am always on that thing. In RS, hmm lately LOTD. I never take it off lol.
[Editor's note: if only phones had teleport functionality and luck enhancement...]

You get to visit one area in Runescape. Where do you go?
Omg the DREAM! I would go to Morytania because I love vampires lol.

Any chance to see you at IRL events like Runefest 2020 or Clan Quest Camp?
Possibly!

Tell us your darkest secret that would make Darth Vader look like the good guy.
My darkest secret is that I play RS. Lol but that is no secret for you all obviously.

May 2020 011.jpg

SHIRO SHANA

Can't believe no one asked this before, but what is your fav quest and why?
One small favour. I think its hilarious!

Would you rather burn 10000 logs or go duo solak with pop?
Burn 10,000 logs

Who is the biggest noob in Clan Quest and why is it Derp?
Noob is the biggest Derp.

When will we do some more clan raids?
RIGHT NOW. Let's go.

OZAZOYO

What other video games do you play?
None. This is the one and only.

What's your coolest video game achievement?
Video game? Hmm when I was 11, I did the whole pacman game on my friend's PS2.

What's your coolest irl achievement?
Getting a full-ride scholarship to the University of Chicago Law school, which is ranked as the 4th best law school in the country.
[Ed: Holy mackerel gimme]

What's one of your favourite movies/books/songs?
Favorite songs is a tough one but my favorite band is Fall Out Boy. I am obsessed! Favorite movies include Harry Potter, Mean Girls, A Cinderella story.

May 2020 012.jpg

Friends or Seinfeld?
Seinfeld!

DIAPOLO

You have two buttons in front of you. One will give you any one superpower of your choice, and the other one will give you the best life partner you can imagine. You can only press one of the buttons, or neither. Make your decision.
Life partner.

Hoods or capes?
CAPES. I hate hoods.

May 2020 013.png

Favourite (NPC) character in-game?
Hmmm... I don't actually have one.

How many slices of bread have you had in your lifetime?
Way too many. I love carbs.

Big thanks to Isarap for the interview and to the Hood for its merciful grace. See you all next month!

New Changes in Old Things - May 2020

The first edition of the Questaholic:
What you are reading here, is one of the many iterations the clan magazine has had over the many years. The first edition of the Questaholic rolled off the presses as early as 2012. That is well over eight years ago now, if you can believe it! The idea came from even earlier, as the magazine was originally coined by Daviddts as part of a merger of the Wolfs Eye clan with Clan Quest. It was in the time of the magazine that the clan was working through the citadel to get access to a famed clan dragon. The saga of Nogard, as told by MsKonnan was a main feature of the magazine, and helped rally the clan behind the effort to reach the highest status in clan citadels that a clan could get to. Members didn't just want to learn about the dragon though, and interviews with clan members have been a feature of the magazine from the very start, and remain front and centre of all the magazines that have released to this day.

January 2012 - 001 (Cover).jpg
The cover of the very first edition of the Questaholic.

The first Editor of the Questaholic:
The Questaholic didn't start out with a Chief Editor, and was a product put together through an equal collaboration between many clan members. Even so, Boricua had stepped up to take care of the covers, which often meant making sure everything came together at the end, and could be seen as the first Chief Editor of the Questaholic. Under this collaborative model, the magazine went strong for several years, containing interviews, puzzles, poetry, guides, and much much more. However, the decentralized process led to a decline in engagement with the magazine, and exactly three years after the start of the magazine, the January 2015 issue was the first one that did never come out. Check out the December 2014 issue for a full list of all those who contributed to the magazine up to that point. Luckily for us, this cease of publication did not spell the end of the magazine.

A huge shoutout to Boricua, Santa Ends, Choto, & Sirapyro

The Next Editor of the Questaholic:
Due to the heroic efforts of Santa Ends, the clan magazines returned in a toned down form, as just member interviews, only half a year later in July 2015, and by decree during an official clan meeting, this was promoted back into a full magazine in November of the same year. While the magazine started out slow, it once again accumulated a group of editors, a mix of old and new. With the Clan Council (still called the High Council back then) using the magazine as an official place for announcements, the magazine became an important part of the clan infrastructure. Lessons were learned from the previous run, and the Chief Editor had their hands full with keeping the magazine releasing month after month. Thought the first two years, Santa Ends kept the magazine rolling off the presses.

Along comes Choto and Sirapyro:
In 2017, that responsibility was largely shifted towards Choto, who took upon himself the role of Chief Editor after that. With large changes to the clan, the magazine had to change alongside it. The magazine became less RuneScape focused. One of the largest changes was the move of the magazine from the forums - where it could only be read by members of Clan Quest - to the wiki, allowing even people from outside the clan to follow along with the Questaholic. All past magazines were migrated to the wiki by Sirapyro in a massive effort, and remain available there for reading today. The new system took a lot of getting used to, and the magazine during these days was co-led by both Choto and Sirapyro. Towards the end of 2019, the publication date of the Questaholic started slipping more and more, until at some point it was decided to stop publishing altogether.

A New Team Arises May 2020:
That brings us to where we are today. A new team of editors have risen up to the challenge to bring new life to the Questaholic, and keep a long-running tradition going for a while longer. We have come a long way since that first issue of the Questaholic in January 2012. Staff members have come and gone, and the content, shape, and formatting changed more than once. Still, there is one thing that has remained true from the very start: the magazine wouldn't be possible with the great efforts put in by a group of passionate people. As we enter a new chapter for this magazine, let us not forget the contributions that have put the magazine where it is today. If you see Boricua, Santa Ends, Choto, or Sirapyro around, make sure to give them some thanks for keeping the magazine going for so long. Of course the magazine also wouldn't be possible with the over forty other contributors, and the new Chief Editor, evilphan. If you're interested to be a part of wherever the Questaholic go next, make sure to reach out to the green names in Discord.

Without them, it wouldn’t have been possible

EVILPHAN

I joined this clan for 2 reasons, 1 because I wanted to get my quest cape back, as it was my first one I got and I just couldn’t seem to do it. EOC was just hard to understand. So, I thought I’d join a Quest clan, get my cape back and then 2, hopefully be able to help others.

Well still no cape, still struggling with EOC, but getting much better thanks to lots of help. But then I realized that this clan is so far more advanced that I’d never be able to help anyone, so when they asked if anyone want to help with the magazine, I offered as I’d hoped I could at least help out someone. I’ve done graphic design some and used to work on models’ pictures, so I thought maybe I could do that.

The first thing that I was asked to do was help transpose an interview. Well that was a disaster. It was a bunch of people talking that I didn’t know and certainly didn’t know their voices. I did the best I could and was never told how bad I did, but I knew it was bad because once I read how it was really done, then I knew.

So, then I just thought well that is that. Then I asked again if they needed help and said sure they needed a new editor, I laughed and said no really, what and realized they were serious.

To make this long story short and by Choto’s threats of yelling, I took on the task. I hope that I can come close to the great job that has been done over the years. I went thru most of the back issues and some fun stuff has been done.

I hope to bring some of my own ideas and you all bring some of yours. I will need help and some “new” blood, so no hiding, I can find you!

Thanks,

This is part one of a Q&A about what it means to play as a Ironman

As I really don’t understand what a Ironman is or why I see these messages in red when they die, I thought I’d ask Ytse to write up some answers to my noob questions.

What are the main differences between regular players and ironmen players?
Aside from the mechanics (answered in the next question) the main thing is the attitude! As an ironman, I’ll be the first to admit that irons have kind of a “holier-than-thou” attitude going on. We also have a tendency to complain a lot more than other players, which is really saying something given RS’ player base! But with that, I feel like irons appreciate newer players’ accomplishments more as well, mainly because we did it recently and remember just how difficult it was.

May 2020 019.jpg

What can’t they do?
- Ironmen can’t trade (except for bonds), use the grand exchange (except for bonds), use the assist system, pick up other players’drops, pick up loot from player killing, play certain minigames, or do group dungeoneering of any kind. We also can’t boss with anyone except for other ironmen. Some non-minigame distractions & diversions are off-limits too – we can’t even attack demon flash mobs. (here is a question I can ask someone) We can give certain items to other players, though! I’ve found a workaround using the Carneillian Chest. (oh 2 questions)

How many types are there? – RS3 has two types: ironman and hardcore ironman. The only difference is that hardcore ironmen have permanent deaths. There are a few other versions of ironman in OSRS – something called “ultimate ironman” where you can’t use your bank or something – but I don’t play OSRS so I’m not the best person to ask there! (hhmm..notes..find a ironman that plays OSRS)

How do they become one?
– The ironman election has to be done on the initial account setup. You can’t opt-in after the account is created.

Can they ever change back? How?

May 2020 020.jpg

- You can! You can talk to Mr. Ex in Edgeville to make an election to change your account back to a standard account. You can also use him to switch from a hardcore ironman to a regular ironman.

Do they only have one death?
– Initially, yes. You can purchase a maximum of two extra lives from Mr. Ex. The first one costs 100k, the second costs 10m – and that’s it.

What are the benefits?
– None in-game! For me, the benefit is a renewed interest in the game. When I got the completionist cape on my old account, I quit RS for a while just out of boredom. Making an ironman got me interested in the game again, to where I’m actually having fun playing. There’s an extra challenge being an ironman that I just enjoy – nothing quite like being maxed and having to go to Lumbridge to shear sheep to make a high-level amulet. There’s also the self-righteous sense of importance, which I guess is a benefit.

Do they have safe deaths?
- Some deaths are safe. Dungeoneering deaths are safe, and a limited amount of quest bosses.

Can they do quests?
[Do they have their own? – We don’t have our own quests, but we can definitely do the regular ones! The only difference is that some quests have additional level requirements that normal accounts don’t have. For example – The Light Within requires 80 crafting, but 89 crafting if you’re an ironman to make the grand defense potion you need for the quest. There are some self-imposed restrictions as well… I didn’t attempt any quests with difficult combat until I had the divination level to make a sign of life.

May 2020 021.jpg

Do they have their own assignments? Rewards?
– Not really, other than satisfaction! Ironmen really are playing the same game everyone else is, just with self-imposed restrictions. We don’t have iron task sets or buffs, other than the “ironman luck” people joke about… to be clear, ironman luck isn’t actually a thing.

Is it more fun than the normal play?
– I think so, but that’s really just opinion! I enjoy it, especially as a hardcore ironman. It’s a lot more adrenaline-inducing doing a boss when you know your (account’s) life is on the line. As I mentioned before, I also really like how it basically forces us to see more of the game. Of course, this has ups and downs… the fun of doing BGH to find your own hunter mattock is alright, but when it takes you nearly 600 Barrows runs to get a full set of armor for the Morytania tasks, that gets a bit old. But at the end of the day, you have fun. One of my favorite quotes is from Neil Peart, the late drummer of Rush, in one of his books: “Adventures suck while you’re having them.” So yes, my Barrows purgatory sucked, but looking back on it, it was a pretty fun journey!

Thanks YTSE..see ya next month with answers for more of my noob questions..and hopefully from OSRS too!
