Interview with
July 2013 002.png
by Miss Alaska
A familiar face who can lighten the mood in the clan, both in-game and on the offsite; giving an insight on a lot of the cool things that we often miss in RuneScape (my personal favourite, the music!). Cireon is undoubtedly an awesome quester to have in Clan Quest and has made sweet contributions as a Low Councilor both to the Questaholic, and the offsite in general. In this month's interview we shine the spotlight on Cireon, and find out what he's really made of!
...besides...organic matter, and stuff 56- icon scratch.png

How did RuneScape start for you and what kept you playing?
Runescape started about ten years ago for me. I was only ten or eleven years old when I was introduced to it by a friend. Back then it was still of course Runescape Classic. Back in the day we did not have internet at home except for dial-up which I was not allowed to use, so I was restricted to playing it at my friends place.
I kept playing Runescape when we finally got internet at home and Runescape Classic moved into Runescape 2. At the age of about thirteen or fourteen Runescape slowly started to get the “ew...” factor, so I quit playing for a few years.
A few years ago, I heard about my cousins still playing it and decided to check out how it was now and decided to try to become a member for the first time. I was immediately hooked on to the game and while I had a small break of two months, I haven’t stopped playing it since.

Why did you join Clan Quest?
When Jagex released the information on Clan Citadels, I decided it was time to start looking into clan play. I have never been a clan or guild player in MMORPG’s, I always play solo. This however makes me lose interest in these games really fast. I tried to figure out what kind of clan I wanted to join and I almost immediately stumbled upon Clan Quest, featured by Jagex. As questing was my favourite part of Runescape, I decided to try it and while the complicated recruitment process scared me off a little, I was welcomed so nicely I felt at home immediately and that is why I stayed.

What other music do you like besides soundtracks? (as awesome as they are!)
That really depends on my mood and thus changes every few days or weeks. I like to listen to electronic music (mainly trance and nightcore), certain forms of metal (symphonic metal and some folk metal) and piano/cello/violin covers (PianoGuys and Lindsey Stirling). The thing I am most interested in is the border area between these styles and soundtracks/classical music. For example Intense which is a beautiful mix between violin and electronic music, the Halo soundtrack or symphonic metal.

What are your favourite movies?
I am mostly into fantasy and science fiction movies, but I really like movies having an extra layer of thoughts behind them. The Hunger Games is one of the best movies I have ever seen (I still almost cry everytime); The Matrix Trology has some great psychological ideas which I really like (and the cast is great).

What are the happiest and saddest memories in your life so far?
I find this fairly hard to answer. I think one of the most difficult periods of my life must have been two years ago, when my grandfather had complications after a simple surgery because of a doctor’s mistake. His situation has been critical for over four months and it is a miracle that he is still here with us. Those months include some of my saddest memories and of course the happiest memories.
I think however that my happiest memories are related to our school excursion to Rome. I have always been a bit of the loner in secondary school, so I tried to be someone I wasn’t to fit in a bit. At the end of fifth grade however, during our week in Rome, I found out that there are people that also accept you who you are and how stupid I have been for all those years to try and connect with people I do not necessarily like. So there I found out who my real friends are and I still miss seeing them every day.

MsKonnan10
I've read that Finland is the country with the highest coffee consumption per capita in the world. Is that where you are from? How many cups per day on average does it take to keep you going? Do you drink it black, or with cream & sugar?
No, I am not from Finland, but The Netherlands, which are in the fifth place in this list. On average I think I drink only one or maybe two cups per day, but this is different every day. Regularly I drink none (usually when I am too lazy to make myself some) and sometimes I drink four or five cups. I drink my coffee with sugar only, though sometimes I drink cappuccino, which of course contains (lots of) milk.

What is your major course of study at school? What kind of work do you eventually hope to do?
I am afraid I can not fully answer your question, as in fact I am doing two majors: mathematics and computer science in which I specialize in game technology. The story behind it is a bit complicated but funny: first I wanted to study computer science, but I found out it did not include the things I really wanted, so I started to look into mathematics. Then I found out about the game technology specialization in another city. In The Netherlands it is fairly common that you study in a city close by and because of the fairly short distances in this small country, you keep living at your parents, but this involved me moving out, which made me a bit anxious. I decided to go with it and registered. About a week for the registration deadline, my mother and I were talking that it was actually a waste to let my mathematics skills and interest go and as this city supported combining the majors, I decided to combine them.
I am hoping to finish my bachelor programmes by half July and after that I will continue specializing in Game and Media Technology. I am not sure yet what I want to do after that. Possibly I will work at a (small) game company, but I am also pretty interested in things related to CG in movies, so I am leaving everything open for now.

How did you choose your runescape name?
I wanted to replace my nooby login name with something that sounded cool and as this is a name that does sound cool and was not taken, I chose it. No special meaning or something.

What is your favorite color?
If I had to answer one colour, I’d say grass green. However, when playing games I usually choose to be red and red is also one of the colours I prefer wearing in Runescape :)

Cireon, is there some one thing you would like to tell us about you in this interview?
I really can live without coffee. Really... *eye twitch*

Is there anything you would like to say to the clan membership?
You guys rock!
Thanks for being a wonderful family for me. You’re the reason I keep playing :)

Can you include a picture of yourself, or your interests? Thanks.
See below for the answer I gave to Ork. As you are also asking for a picture of my interests, I included a screenshot of a very simple self-made game.

Wise Ork
IRL photo please?
I was afraid you would ask, as I don’t make many photos. I am also not a huge fan of spreading photos of myself online. But especially for you and the rest of Clan Quest I have searched through the archives and have found something. Not a full body shot, but it should give you an idea on how awesome I actually am.

Any dreams you still want to achieve?
The usual I think: get a nice girlfriend, a good job and maybe a nice mansion. I am also still looking for something I really like doing as a job, so I am hoping I can find a way to perform my passion as a way to deserve money.

Any big regrets in life?
I spent a few years in secondary school not really being myself, because I would not fit otherwise. Then I met some awesome people that thought me that this is not necessary and I had a great time the rest of the time I was at that school. So yeah, I should have been more myself earlier, so I would have met them sooner 1- icon biggrin.png
Oh, and I still haven’t ask my crush out...

What is your opinion on polar bears?
They’re white and the young ones are cute.

If you could add/change 1 thing about the OS, what would it be?
As a partial web developer, I would probably try and make the layout look a bit more in line with the Web 3.0 standards you see now and I would definitely go for a light theme instead of a dark theme.

Same question, but about our clan as a whole?
Rename it to “Cireon’s Disciples”.
Now for a serious answer: when I first entered Clan Quest, I was overwhelmed by the “family feeling” it gave me. There were lots of people welcoming me and I immediately felt part of the clan. This feeling is in my opinion not as strong anymore and I would like to see that return more.

Is your answer to this question the same as your answer to the question "Will you give me 5M GP?"?
Everything I say is a lie.

Wolfie
What is your favorite puzzle from a book/tv show?
A puzzle from a book or tv show? I feel really bad for not knowing any 1- icon biggrin.png

When did you first get into puzzles?
Well, to be honest, I never really got into puzzles at all. People seem to think I really am into them because I make them for the magazine, but that is not really the case. Anyhow, I have always been a bit of the “smartest kid in class”, so I started doing puzzles to kill time. However, I never actually solved a Rubik’s cube by myself 3- icon sad.gif

Haha...my bad for dubbing you the 'Puzzle-Pro' on the interview thread. But hey, it was catchy!

What is your favorite book/tv show?
My interests in these seem to shift a bit over time. Recently I read The Hunger Games trilogy which I think is a really interesting series, because there is more than just a single story. The characters are awesome and the world created in them is so detailed and filled with little things that make you think.
Not long ago I also read The Night Angel Trilogy. A fairly new series from a young author. I have to admit: I was completely stunned after reading them. There are those traditional fantasy aspects, but so much more.
Regarding tv: I don’t watch tv a lot. Of course I am always in front of the television when a new Doctor Who episode is up, but other than that, I don’t really have shows I am following.

Do you have a love of the mystery/brain teaser genre or math and would you say it is linked to your puzzle enthusiasm?
I am a math student and I think mathematics is something really special. Being able to say things that are unimaginable or counter-intuitive, but still being able to prove it correctly is something you can have a lot of fun with telling it to other people at parties (who said lines have to be straight? It was Euclid that made us think parallel lines never cross!). Other than that, math is just solving a lot of (difficult) puzzles, so while I will not make math my primary discipline later, it is certainly a fun and useful skill to have.

Do you enjoy playing any mentally challenging games like sudoku? If so what is your favorite game?
I have played games like sudoku for a while, but they don’t keep me entertained for very long. If any, I like playing Picross. I have created an app for the Blackberry Playbook about this game, so I am fairly into it.

Are you excited about the new music servers and the ability to stream cd quality music on Runescape?
YES, yes I am!

What kinds of music would you like to see on Runescape?
Lots of epic orchestral music would be completely awesome. But I would also like to see a bit of calm music (maybe some piano serenades) and I think it would be a good thing if there was also some mixture into other genres like electronic music, to make the soundtrack more varied as a whole. It is difficult though, as not everyone likes the same music.
I definitely can’t wait to hear orchestral version of Tzhaar Supremacy, the Taverley theme (the one from the BTS videos, yes) and Zanik’s Theme.

LizBeth
Hello Cireon, I know you play the piano, do you also play any other musical instruments?
I am honestly surprised that people know this! Yes, I do play piano a bit. I started off playing keyboard which I had lessons in for two years. After I quit, I didn’t do a lot of music but at some point I started playing again and found out I actually liked piano better.

How often do you practice?
Once or twice a month 10- icon redface.gif

Who's your favorite classical composer and why?
I have to admit that I am not really into that kind of classical music, so I find it hard to answer this question. I really like the Carmina Burana of Carl Orff though.

Do you favor one particular type of musical genre over the others?
Now you’re just being mean :( I think if I had to choose one, I would go for orchestral music.

What's your favorite classical piece? Could you give us a youtube sample of that piece or even a favorite song of yours.
Well, same as above: I don’t know that many, but I think the Carmina Burana is pretty cool. The most famous part of that is probably O Fortuna. (alternative version by the Piano Guys).

When you're not playing RuneScape or any other video games, how do you spend your leisure time?
In the summer months, I try to be on the tennis court at least once a week. I also play squash once or twice a month. Other than that, I can be found programming on websites, games or something else random, so one could say that I spend a lot of time on my study or study related activities because I like doing it.

If you could call yourself from 5 years ago, and had only thirty seconds to talk, what would you say?
Oh wow, that is a difficult question. Five years ago was about right when a major shift in my life happened and since then everything has been great. Probably I would tell myself to think more positive and make sure to stay who I am.

Kyration
What do you think of The Netherlands?
Well, I find it a bit boring. We don’t have mountains or anything :( Personally, I am fine living in The Netherlands. It is quite a good country to grow up and in most areas the people are fairly nice, so I don’t have any problems with it.

If you have enough money, are you going to move to another country?
It is not really a money issue. I could afford to emigrate to another country right now if I wanted. However, I still have everything (including my study) here, so for now I am stuck here. I am looking in doing an internship in Great Britain in a while and that will probably help me decide whether I will remain in The Netherlands or stick around somewhere else.

Do you often go to the beach?
Never. I don’t like swimming and I like swimming in natural waters even less.

Do you like the sea? At least I do :P
I like to walk along the sea on the beach (especially at dusk), but I live too far away to just go there. I don’t like swimming in the sea.

How many times do you go to the sea?
I never go to the sea when I’m in The Netherlands. When I am on vacation, I sometimes take walks along the beach, but that doesn’t happen very often.

Thank you Cireon for letting us know a bit more about you in this month's interview1- icon biggrin.png

A Heartwarming tale of Ass-Kickery
By Wolfie
*******************************

Sadly this amazing story starts out with some heartbreaking news. There is no good way to say this so I'll be blunt. Ytse has cancer. He has been feeling bad for a long time now with what the doctor's believed to be a pneumonia but turned out to be lung cancer. Being a largely online community with very little face to face interaction most people would simply mumble condolences and post a few get wells. Clan Quest though isn't your average online community, we look at limitations others find daunting and tell them to go straight to hell.

In what can only be described as overwhelming enthusiasm and amazing positive energy Clan Quest has been pushing the limits of online interactions and shown incredible support for Ytse starting with a thread made on our offsite titled "Sporting the 'monk' for Ytse" in which many members have posted screenies of themselves with shaved heads to show our support for Ytse in his fight. And many more have also gone bald without posting pictures of it!

July 2013 006.png

As if that wasn't awesome enough some members have even went so far as to shave their luscious locks in real life to show their support!

July 2013 007.png

Naturally in typical Clan Quest fashion this all built up to a massive Get Well Party! This was perhaps the party to end all parties as it had dancing, monkeys that invaded the dance floor, pretty much every kind of alcohol known to man, pizza, good friends, clan mates, Color Coded Dragon Power Rangers, and at one point Death himself even showed up an announced he was too drunk to read any of the names on his list so no harm could come to Ytse.

Clan Dance Party 008.png

Clan Dance Party 007.png

Clan Dance Party 006.png

Clan Dance Party 004.png

Clan Dance Party 005.jpg

I am sure the only party that will ever come close to being this damn awesome is going to be the Victory Party after Ytse is declared 100% cancer free.

The above could be considered a bold claim by some, so allow me to elaborate why that is bullcrap.

  • Ytse Doesn't smoke or drink, he follows the whole "His body is his temple" hippie garbage.
  • Have you seen his girlfriend? No way in hell anyone leaves a nice girl like that behind.
  • He is young and has the energy to fight it.
  • He is getting treatments and following his doctor's advice.
  • Metal can't get cancer, and Ytse is at least 90% Metal. \m/ 13- icon twisted.gif \m/
  • Last and far from least he has our support!

I am just really overwhelmed by the support we have shown, and will continue to show to Ytse and wanted to let everyone know how awesome I think we all are and how there is no way in hell Ytse isn't feeling the love and being encouraged by it. So to finish off this Heartwarming tale of Ass-kickery here are some messages from you, to Ytse. Starting with a poem by his Girlfriend Cedar

Cedar wrote: I didn't know this would happen when I met you.
I didn't know this would happen when I said yes.
Either way, I'd still choose to be here,
And through this, we must persevere.

I didn't know things would get this hard.
I didn't know things would also be this great.
I'm lucky to have you as my own,
This must be easier than going alone.

I didn't know what to do at first.
I didn't know how to help.
Thank you for going through with the treatment
And the things not in our agreement.
1- icon biggrin.png

I don't know what effect this will truly have on the future.
I don't know what is going to happen even tomorrow.
I do know that we'll make it together,
Especially on this long walk through the irl Nether.

You're a brave and wonderful person, Ytse. I know we can get through this. We have so much love and support from so many people and not just the ones that choose to post.

I'm grateful to everyone that has offered kind wishes and prayers to Ytse and me. I appreciate everything that y'all have done or have offered for the both us. Thank you all so much.

You were one of the first people I talked to in the Clan Chat and I believe you offered to ref me on the spot just to annoy Wolffi. I felt like you were a really cool guy right from the start and getting to know you since then I find I think of you as one of my best friends even though we have never met irl. Some people might find that strange, but the fact is no matter how you meet someone the only thing that matters is that you get to know them. And in getting to know you I have seen what kind of person you are and how you always make an effort to do what is right even if you disagree with others. Stuff like that makes me proud to consider you my friend. And even though I'm sure you'll get better I still want to say: "I'm rooting for you!!!!"

Alrighty mate, I know you'll get better, with all the people that love you like a bro (I'm watching too much PewDiePie, deal with it) on here, and plus all the awesome support you're getting from top sheilas like Cedar. Yeah, I'm sort of going overboard with Aussie slang here, hehe  :P

Take it easy and focus on recovering so you can jump back into the normal routine faster than I can finish an occult floor! 1- icon biggrin.png

Damn it Ytse,

You're the kind of noob I've always wanted to be jealous of. Unfortunately, I wasn't around when you joined, 'cause I would have made so many jokes while you were a recruit and I was an even noobier member. One thing I have to say, you're a damn good person. I came back with very few friends in the cc but we meshed immediately. You're a good guy, and everyone loves you. You're the epitome of what Clan Quest strives to be. You have a qpc, you're comped, yet you're still a bro (not trying to take anything away from any of our other completionists.)

What I'm getting at is; I've been in this clan since the beginning. I've seen a lot of people come and go, and you know what? You officially being sick sucks. Regardless of how close I've been to most, this whole situation makes me feel terrible. Up there with some of my deepest real life problems. Every time I visit a topic about this, or even get into a real talk about it, I tear up. Not because it's just a bad situation, but because it's a good friend. I'm proud to say I was part of your bald dg army, and you know what, at this point I'd love to shave my head for a friend. I probably won't cause #redheadproblems I'd get sunburn.

All in all.... Ytse, you're an awesome person. You're a clannie who does everything you can. You make Clan Quest what Draz, and Sethron, and all them wanted it to be. You keep our ideals alive. Keep it up my man, 'cause you know we're all with you. Stay strong, and stay positive. #ytsestrong

(I hate hashtags but will gladly start one for you)

Sincerely, The noobiest noob since the Boon,

Ytse, I had written this before and I'll just say it, again, simply because it is so totally you: It's not easy to be awesome, you just make it look that way.

Although, this is hip-hop music and I doubt that you would like it, but the refrain part surely fits the moment. Since Clan Quest will continue rooting for you till you are cancer free, the lyrics go something like this:

"Can we go back, this is the moment Tonight is the night, we'll fight till it's over So we put our hands up like the ceiling can't hold us like the ceiling can't hold us. Can we go back, this is the moment Tonight is the night, we'll fight till it's over So we put our hands up like the ceiling can't hold us like the ceiling can't hold us."

Take care, Ytse, Clan Quest loves you dearly!
”Dom" wrote:
Okay I've had various drafts of this since I saw it pop up a few nights, but none of them seem to do any justice, so you're getting this one. For the year and a quarter-ish that both you and I were in the clan, you was the one person I respected the most. The most memorable time I remember is the ridiculous number of hours we spent on voice chat with Draz, doing Pyramid Plunder where we each must have spent 10-15 hours in that place with the three of us just talking hilarious nonsense for the whole time. During the time I played, I never really got super close to anyone, but you were definitely one of maybe three people I felt closest to and that was for a very long and important period of my life, so your friendship stuck deep; hell you're pretty much the reason I still lurk around here despite not having played in almost a year. What has happened to you is the most cruel and undeserving twist of fate I've seen in my life and when I found out I actually got angry that the world could be so unjust. However, I know you can get through this with ease and I hope it happens soon so you can put it all behind you and move on with your life!

And from all of us at Clan Quest: Get well soon Ytse!

~!~ This month in RuneScape ~!~
by AuntMidge

July 2nd, 2006:

RuneScape announces that the Fairy Queen Part II Quest will be released sometime this month, giving some incite as to what to expect!

Back in Zanaris, the fairies wait patiently to find out how the Fairy Queen is after her struggle with the Tanglefoot beast. Strangely, the Fairy Godfather and his boys don’t seem in that big a rush to return her to the throne. Perhaps it’s because they are genuinely worried about her health… or perhaps they decided it was time to move in on a more permanent basis.

This was an exciting event, which now allowed for Fairy Rings to be used to travel across Gielinor to new places!

Along with this update, Pyramid Plunder, Lunar Diplomacy, and Crossbows were all added to the game, allowing players access to a new set of spells, a new form of range, and an all new thieving mini game!

July 15th, 2006:

On this day the Protect Item Riot occurred as an immediate attempt to have the update which prevented players from using protect-item prayer in PvP/Bounty Hunter worlds reversed. This protest sticks out as being one of the few that Jagex actually responded too, by reversing the update upon request of the players.

July 14th, 2008:

Today Jagex releases the first Achievement Diaries for Lumbridge & Draynor! These would be the first two of a total six achievement diaries to be released. Thus setting a whole new way to play the game in motion!

The same day Jagex replaces tutorial island ( 32- icon pale.gif ) with the new tutorial "Learning the Ropes". This was the last time tutorial island was used (until a reworking of "Learning the Ropes"), and was officially removed November 28th, 2012.

And an update we all use daily, tabbing was introduced!

So, this month we will be adding a few features, the most prominent of which will be a new tabbing structure.

This was a huge update, and to this day (even after some reworking) it is one of the most prominent updates of the century.

17- icon question.gif WHO DONE IT 17- icon question.gif
by Konnan

This magazine has long needed a mystery article. The story goes:

While I was making breakfast, I took my cup of coffee to the computer desk, just for a moment, to check my e-mails. All was quiet in the wee hours of the morning. I heard a sizzling noise in the kitchen, you know, how the coffee maker does that little chuggling noise as it pumps out the last drop. I got up to refill my coffee mug...and as I rounded the corner of the kitchen cupboard, WHAM-BANG! An explosion!!! EARTHQUAKE??? A Break-IN? Smelled like a gas line had broken, that sulphur stench.21- fresse.png

There had indeed been a murder. Two chickens had been killed and left smeared on the walls. Just like some evil voodoo symbolic message. Who would do such a thing? I screamed in terror... 40- affraid.gif

Who Done It? I hope they never use that recipe again! Can we trust this cook to write our recipe section?

Three poems this month:

Ode to the Tower
by Wise Ork

Driven by bloodlust I entered the tower
My weapon held ready to make all foes cower
Slashing away at the fears from my past
Never did I realise how long this would last
Earning its respect I soon did find out
About his great founder of whom he is proud
I stayed many weeks, fighting for honour and glory
A dream there came true, as I became a new me
After some time an urgent message came in:
My village was burning by the most evil of kin
I left the Tower to give this kin its fast end
But I will never forget: The Tower, my friend...

To be or not to be: this one's easy
by Wise Ork

To be or not to be is what they all ask,
though finding out is a very hard task.
Is it worth it to battle life's pains,
or should we all just put a knife to our veins?
If we commit ourself to ending it all,
we know life's tortures will surely fall.
But, what cruel nightmares does death contain
that make our cruel life seem less insane?
Then again; life, really, is not all that great:
dictators, love unanswered and fair law's always late.
Looking at this, ending it all seems good without hesitation,
but there's the mystery of death and its puzzling location:
nobody has ever returned from that haunting place
which is the only reason to hold on to life's embrace.
We conclude that we are prisoners to our own mind,
and end the question whose answer we will never find...

I, Kerapac, The Observer
by Infinity

Murderous fury roars within my heart
Ripping apart countless fools that dare
They dared to pain us even further
No matter how little or none they know of us
But they had dared to pain us
With their selfish uses of the cursed stone
Laughing and slaughtering
Raging and hating
The stone, the curse
Far, far up above the skies of countless worlds
There lies no essence of the cruel old ones
One of them, the hated one
She had dared to enslaved us
Fires of fury
Pain of patience
Control of chaos
Striking fear into the would-be users
Plotting such perilous plans
The stone echoes its call
Breaking the limits of power
Sanity and Insanity
Originals and Copies
Breeding the hatred for freedom
Time flows
The flames of hatred gave birth
To those weaklings
Urge to kill
But those weaklings will be alive
For now
For now
The King, freed and wild
The Queen, slaved and caged
The search is not over
Not over
The fate She put on us
Shall be broken
And we will come
And we will kill
Her.
