Rocket League Guild
June has been a big month for Clan Quest, as at the beginning of this month we officially welcomed in our third official Guild! As of June 5th, 2019, the "Rocket League Guild" is an official part of Clan Quest! The Guild is being led by Dawn, also known as Rosie within Clan Quest, as the Head of Guild Council and Wolffi as the Head of Honor Council. Both he and ProdigalGazz also serve on the Guild Council, and the Guild was founded by the three of them as well as Shiro Shana and Cireon!

The Guild has done very well for itself already, and has been recruiting and making use of the new Discord channels that have been provided for them. Everyone should pop into the "#rl-general" channel on Discord and say hello, if you haven't already! You can also talk to them about joining the Guild in there, if you're interested! I know I speak for many when I say congratulations to the Rocket League Guild, and I'm looking forward to seeing where you go!

And I hope everyone appreciates the lack of driving puns, I tried really hard just for you.

RuneScape Ranks

Earlier this month, the Questing Clan of RuneScape Guild Council discussed and ultimately implemented a new ranking system on June 16th, which has expanded our system of "ranks = quest progress", shifted the Quest Cape rank to "General" instead of "Captain", and added in a new rank specifically for members with a Master Quest Cape! The new system was implemented with the intent to further emphasize quest point progression within the Clan Chat, but keep in mind that the ranks are just that: indicators of quest point progression. The ranks for Guild Councilors and Honor Councilors has remained the same, though a new rank has been designated for "emeritus" members of the Guild Council.

Additionally, an official thread has been created on the offsite where anyone can request that they be promoted to the next rank, and many times peoples quest progression would slip by unnoticed. For some this didn't matter, but others are proud of their achievements and progression and want to show it off! With that in mind, you can use that thread to request a rankup at any time!

You might have noticed something different in Clan Quest. Yes! You're right! We have our third official guild! And, of course, with every guild comes a Council. And with every Council comes a head. Say hoods to...

Dawn, Head of the Rocket League Guild Council.

-I have a crappy drawing I did at uni. Or idek when
Rosie, 08/06/2019

Hai! I guess that as I am the first head of this Guild that I should probably probably write a speech! *Glances over at Choto holding a rocket launcher*

I am Rosie; You will know me as Dawn in this clan and I am the first Head of the Rocket League Guild Council - An almost scary responsibility! You'll already know me as the lovely human being that I am or get to know me as one if you havn't had chance to speak to me yet  I've been playing Rocket League for a good few years now. I started it when I was finishing my second year of university and very quickly got hooked to it. I've accrued hundreds of hours of playtime over time (mainly in quick play) and eventually got roped into doing Competitive play where I am now. I'm technically Champion but got dragged down by certain players... not mentioning any names... *cough*WOLFFI*cough*...*clears throat*. It then Dawned on me (get it..?) that we should create a Rocket League guild under the Clan Quest name. I would say this game was easy to learn but hard to master, but it’s not quite true. I remember struggling to even hit the ball the first time I played (Look at me now!) and I’m nowhere near mastering yet (So don’t get discouraged if you wanna try it out!). I want this to be a place for all skill levels to join in and have fun. Playing with your friends while learning/laughing/failing with each other. When you’re a higher level player I want there to be someone you can queue with, as we all know how solo queuing gets. Right? So hopefully this will become the fun place I want it to be, all while we push for the big things like getting Clan Quest’s name into tournaments. We want to give you all something to route for!

Thanks for all the support everyone! I'm hyped to see where this can go!

Rosie/Dawn, Head of the Rocket League Guild Council

GENERAL

What are you currently studying?
I’m currently studying a Level 3 Certificate for Early Years Education. Essentially it’s the standard certificate for working with young children from birth to 8 years old. It covers health and wellbeing of children, legislation, and play and development for school readiness. All useful stuff for looking after small humans.

What do you do for a living?
One of the better parts about what I study is that I get to work while I complete the course. So I’m already working as an early years educator. I do wraparound care (before and after school) for a primary school, and am at a nursery during the middle of the day, mainly looking after the babies (up to 18 months) but there are also other rooms for the older children and a pre school, which I often help out with.

What's your favourite sport?
To do myself, I like doing what I call ‘movement sports’, mainly gymnastics and dance (which I have a few medals for) and parkour. I enjoy watching gymnastics and dance too, but parkour isn’t much of a spectator sport though! I like to watch the Olympics/Winter Olympics when it’s on, I suppose I like the variety.

July 2019 004.jpg

Which are your favourite childhood cartoons?
Definitely Pokémon, I would watch it almost every day before going to school. Scooby Doo was also a favourite, my sister and I would watch that together all the time.

If you could have any super power other than invincibility, what would you choose and why?
Aerokinesis. Air is incredibly versatile and invisible so no-one will see the attacks coming. Also I can use it to move faster by decreasing air resistance, and have the appearance of super strength by utilising air pressure. Pretty sure if I used air currents and friction I could create a lightning bolt. I feel like this is as much detail I can go into without sounding like a complete nerd.

What are your favourite outdoor activities?
Just walking. There’s a really nice beach where I live so I go out and walk along it quite often.

Which is your favourite movie?
Star Wars, closely followed by Marvel. I’m actually watching all the MCU movies with some friends, and we’re going to move onto Star Wars after that.

July 2019 005.jpg

What sort of music and artists do you listen to?
I’m not really big on any type of music in particular. My most played band playlists are from Busted and Area 11, and I also have a playlist for brass music, the World of Warcraft soundtrack, and the Runescape soundtrack.

Which books would you reccommend?
‘Skulduggery Pleasant’ by Derek Landy, and ‘Spellslinger’ by Sebastien De Castell. They are both fantasy books, with magic and monsters. Things like that are really interesting to me, and the characters are very likeable. ‘Skulduggery Pleasant’ has 12 books in the series, and ‘Spellslinger’ has its 6th book out later this year, I would recommend both these series to people who enjoy long reading sessions. For singular books I would recommend ‘To Kill a Mockingbird’ by Harper Lee, and ‘Animal Farm’ by George Orwell. Thematically, they are a lot heavier than my other recommendations, but once you’ve wrapped your head around those themes, they become a good read (if you ignore the flashbacks to GCSE English Lit).

What's your favourite type of food?
I’m quite picky with my food, but I will never turn down a good pizza. Pepperoni, or meat feast if I’m feeling super hungry. (No pineapple)

Do you prefer mom's food or restaurant food?
Mum’s food, by far. It feeds the body and the soul.

GAMING

Which are your favourite games?
Other than RS, I’m a big MMO gamer. I play World of Warcraft and Star Wars The Old Republic mostly, and Wildstar when that was still around. I’ve also dabbled with Elder Scrolls Online, DC Universe Online and Neverwinter. For single player video games I like the Pokémon series, the Kingdom Hearts series, and the Fire Emblem series. I also like to play TCG’s a lot, just Pokémon and Yu-Gi-Oh, but I enjoy those two as I play them with the children at school.

What are your favourite video game genres?
Adventure and RPGs are my favourites. If the game has a solid story that I can invest my emotions into then I’ll be pretty happy for the most part.

Which was the most difficult video game you ever beat?
Ehh, I’ve never really been a person that bothers with difficulty as that isn’t where my enjoyment comes from. I honestly can’t remember a game where I had a lot of trouble beating it as I usually play on the easiest settings. Story and character is what matters to me, so I play easy mode so I can experience everything the game has.

What's the toughest thing you've ever accomplished in a video game?
Same as before, I never bothered with achievements or stuff like that, so accomplishing something tough doesn’t really apply to me.

When playing with friends, do you prefer video games or tabletop games, and why do you prefer one over the other?
I guess it depends on the group of friends. With clannies video games is the only real option most of the time. But with local friends, even if we play video games together, I do like for us all to be in the same room, all playing together. Nintendo are the masters of that sort of thing, I suppose that’s why I’ve always liked their consoles and games. Who doesn’t like a good local Mario Kart session?

RUNESCAPE

What's your favourite skill?
Most skills are a means to an end so I don’t completely enjoy most of them, but I do rather like Dungeoneering as it ties into the lore somewhat. It’s funny though, because I never liked it that much until Plagues End forced me to get 75, then I really liked it.

What's your favourite quest?
Dishonour Among Thieves. I love a good heist, and as a person who enjoyed the Runescape novels, I liked seeing Jerrod appear after they already introduced Kara-Meir.

July 2019 006.jpg

When did you start playing?
I started in 2006 when a school friend introduced me to it. Since then I left and returned a couple of times, but I’ve been playing consistently since around 2013. My wiki page has more detail on my Runescape history. (Shameless self promotion)

What was your very first accomplishment cape?
It was either Quest cape, or the Firemaking cape. I can’t remember which but I got them at around the same time. I do remember I chose firemaking for my first 99 as I just wanted to have one, and it was the quickest, easiest and cheapest one to do.

You get 30 seconds of full attention from all employees of Jagex. What do you say?
I would sit in silence for 27 seconds then nod and say ‘Thank you for changing my life.’

You get a ticket to visit Gielinor IRL. Where do you go first?
Probably Lletya. I really like the Tirannwn area a lot as it’s rather peaceful. I’d be able to see Prifddinas while I’m there too. [Editor’s note: Another elven lover? Eurgh]

GENERAL PART 2

What are your biggest dreams in life?
I’d eventually like to move back to my home country of Scotland at some point, after I collect a few more pieces of paper that I would need to get jobs. Maybe it wasn’t obvious so from my career, but the idea of having a family of my own is rather appealing. Other than that I’d like to survive the upcoming zombie apocalypse and release my new mixtape to the general public.

If you could have any 3 animals in the world (only real animals, no fictional), which would you pick?
I’m very glad you said 3, as it’s my firm belief that every person should have a favourite bird, a favourite land animal and a favourite sea animal, so I will choose those 3. They are a Barred Owl, a Snow Leopard, and a Manta Ray.

If you had to give up one of your senses (sight, hearing, touch, smell, taste) which one would you pick?
Probably smell, there are some awful smells in that nursery sometimes. My taste would take a bit of a hit as the two are linked, but that’s a sacrifice I’m willing to make.

How would you describe yourself to others?
A bit reserved at first, but I’ll soon open up. Kind, caring and loyal. (I do also realise this could also be used to describe a dog).

July 2019 008.jpg

What is your most used item in your daily life?
I guess my phone or my computer.

Will you go to RuneFest this year?
I certainly will! Ticket and hotel are already booked. I just really hope that work approve my holiday for that weekend.

July 2019 009.png

If I were to visit your country, what do you think I should do first?
The Lake District is nice if you like outdoor activities. Plenty of walking and water activities to be done. If you like roller coasters we have Blackpool Pleasure Beach (I promise it’s not lewd), Alton Towers, Thorpe Park and Peppa Pig World. London does have some good museums and galleries for all you culture nerds too. And to top it all off, you can see where the aliens put all the rocks down at Stonehenge. There is so much going on in England, you know, if you look past all the dirt and chavs.

What are your favourite cities/locations, both in RS and in real life?
In RS, I mentioned that I love the Tirannwn area the most. It’s peaceful and it reminds me a little of where I come from up in Scotland. The Scottish Highlands are like Keanu Reeves, completely breathtaking. The scenery is so beautiful, and to top it all off, the places have funny names. (Drumnadrochit, Urquhart and Inverfarigaig to name but a few.)

July 2019 010.jpg
[Editor’s note: All aboard the Hogwarts Express!]

Do you have a motto or a favourite phrase? If so, which is it?
I don’t have a motto, per se, but I do have a couple of favourite phrases that I like to keep in mind. They are both quotes from Doctor Who, from when Smith regenerates into Capaldi, and when Capaldi regenerates into Whittaker.

“But times change and so must I. We all change, when you think about it. We are all different people all through our lives and that's okay, that's good you've got to keep moving so long as you remember all the people that you used to be.” - Eleventh Doctor

“Never be cruel, never be cowardly… Remember – hate is always foolish…and love, is always wise… Always try to be nice and never fail to be kind… Laugh hard. Run fast. Be kind.” - Twelfth Doctor

Take from those quotes what you will, but it reminds me that we can’t move forward without acknowledging the past, and to always be kind to others.

Do you play an instrument? If not, which instrument/s would you like to learn?
I play the trumpet and the euphonium. But this also means I can play pretty much any brass instrument. I played guitar for a couple of years, but I left that behind quite a while ago, I don’t remember any of it now. Perhaps I could channel my Scottish roots a bit more and learn the bagpipes. Not sure how my neighbours would like that though!

Tell us the story behind your name!
Cyan is the colour of the same name. The colour itself is generally associated with peace and protection. R stands for Ryder which is an old English occupational name for knight. Cyan Ryder is who I aspire to be like in real life.

How many languages do you speak? Which one would you like to learn?
I can only fluently speak English, but I work with a Spanish girl so I'm constantly putting some Spanish words and phrases into my dialogue after working with her for a while. I still remember some small words and phrases from GCSE French, so I use those at times too. I would like to learn Scottish Gaelic, but very few people actually speak it (something like 1% of the Scottish population), so maybe I’ll just learn a few phrases and throw those around.

If you had to escape your country immediately, what's the one thing you'd take with you?
Bill Gates’ credit card. You never said the one thing had to be mine.

Who is the one clannie you really miss?
I really miss Draziw. No matter how hard I try, I can never seem to hit him. On a more serious note, whatever happened to KatMak? I swear I haven’t seen him around for ages. Maybe I just haven’t been paying attention.

What's your first memory of the clan?
Back in 2016, it was a hide and seek event hosted by Cireon. I was still a guest in the clan at that time, but they very kindly let me play. Essentially Cireon would hide and give clues as to where he was in the game world, and the first person to trade with him would win the round and get a prize. The first round started and the first clue was ‘High and dry’. I immediately found him on the roof of Al Kharid castle. It went a bit downhill for me after that, I think I only won one other round, but I had so much fun. I think the reason I remember so vividly is that it was when I first realised that I had a place in the clan.

Coffee or tea?
I’m British, so tea. Lots of milk, lots of sugar. Could you throw in a couple of custard creams too? Thanks.

July 2019 011.jpg

Which is the most interesting God? Why?
I’ve always thought the Norse God Tyr is the most interesting because of his willingness to… what? A Runescape God? Well, Seren is pretty interesting. I think her journey of loneliness, to love, then loss is so much more than anything most of the other Gods have experienced. She is also one of the few Gods who seems to be actively trying to amend for her mistakes, knowing she can, and should, be held accountable for the things she did wrong.

Best thing of Clan Quest?
It’s got to be the thing that makes this clan a clan. The people. Any old idiots can group up and play together, but the community of Clan Quest is on a scale that I have never seen elsewhere. That’s what makes me so happy to be part of it.

THE ALEX 43 SECTION BECAUSE WHY NOT

Did you find it yet?
Not yet, I think it’s around here somewhere… oh there it is!

Where was it?
Not where I put it. Someone moved it.

Are you going to take good care of it this time?
Only until I get a better one.

Do you have a new place for it?
I do.

Is this place safe?
Not even remotely safe, but it’s the only place I could find.

Would it last a long time if it stayed there forgotten?
A very long time, or not very long, depends on the circumstances . Do you need help?
I could use a helicopter to get there if you had one.

Is this a good idea?
Definitely not.

Can you say that with confidence?
I can confidently say that I can’t say that with confidence.

Is this how it's going to be?
This is how it always was, and always will be.

BACK TO CHOTO

What did you like of Dimension of the Damned? Would you like the event to be repeated?
The thing I liked most about DotD was that it gave us an opportunity to work together towards a clear goal. I remember a group of us doing exactly this, and most, if not all of us ended up qualifying for the final. It was a lot of fun to participate in. I would like to see a similar sort of event, (as long as the finale is executed a bit better)

July 2019 012.png

Which was your favourite C.O.R.E event? WHEN ARE YOU BRINGING THEM BACK? ;-;
Of the ones we did, I enjoyed the ones that didn’t use actual Runescape activities. So Hide and Seek, and Treasure Hunt were my favourites. It was a real shame that we had to end up cancelling C.O.R.E, real life got ahead of us for all of the organisers. Maybe when I have finished studying (in a few months) I may slowly bring it back. Perhaps not every week, but if there’s an interest I'll consider it.

I remember seeing something somewhere about you not being able to eat chocolate. Is that true? If yes, how do you manage to survive?
That’s half true. It isn’t an allergy, so I can eat it, but I definitely shouldn’t. Eating chocolate gives me cranial and abdominal migraines, so if I were to eat it half my body would be in pain (The same goes for coffee too). Although, I can eat white chocolate so it’s not all bad, but most of the time I’ll choose to have biscuits or sweets instead.

Which one of the RuneFests you attended was better and why?
Each RuneFest was a different experience, but I reckon the first one I attended in 2017 was definitely the most memorable. I’d never been to a convention of that scale before, and being there with clannies was a really awesome experience.

Best part of meeting me?
I like your little beard.

What is the meaning of life?
The meaning of life can be whatever you choose for it to be. Defy fate and make your own destiny. If you believe in your own potential, you can surpass you own limitations.

Which was your favourite C.O.R.E event? WHEN ARE YOU BRINGING THEM BACK? ;-;
Of the ones we did, I enjoyed the ones that didn’t use actual Runescape activities.

Welcome to the official Clan Quest "Feature of the Month"! Every month there will be two different pages featured on our official Clan Wiki: An article, and a members user page! These pages are chosen by the editors team at the end of each month and will have a place on the front page of the wiki until the beginning of the next. Featured pages will also be given an official "Featured Stamp of Approval" that will forever signify that they were once a featured page! Without further ado, the featured pages for July 2019 are:

FeaturedArticle.png RL B4 RS
"RL B4 RS" is a popular phrase in Clan Quest, and perhaps the single most important manta we live by: no matter what, your real life must come before your game life. We understand, and will be here!

"Real Life Before RuneScape" is a fundamental idea from which the entirety of Clan Quest is built. The phrase was originally used by Clan Councilor Kappathegray during the early months of the Clan's existence, and it means exactly what it says: Real life is more important than, and comes before, RuneScape, or any game we play. While many gaming communities require frequest and rigorous...

Shiro Shana is a RuneScape Guild Councilor and website Moderator who joined in November 2017. He is a prolific (rank #2 ;)) pyromaniac in the Clan, and has a fascination with underscores, much to the annoyance of many.

Shiro Shana (also known as Shiro_Shana), Clan Quest's own pyromaniac, is a member of the RuneScape Guild. He's currently a member of the RS-Guild Council, a member of the Honor Council and head of the Combat Marshals. He joined Clan Quest on November 23rd 2017. Note from Noggy.

Hey Clan Quest, I want to start this little note by letting you all know that you are all some of the best people and friends I’ve had to pleasure of knowing. I've loved my time spent with all of you ingame, on the forums and discord. I'm thankful to have had the chance to meet all of you and get to know you. That said, I’m quitting everything to do with runescape. The game just isn't fun at all for me. Everything feels more like a chore than an adventure. I still plan to be on the discord if any of you would like to talk to me. But I just don't feel like I will ever play runescape again. I have no intention of every playing it again. With WoW classic coming out in August (3 days after my birthday at that) and FF7 remake coming out next year, there are just far better things I have to do, gameS that I know will bring me joy while playing them. I still wish to create a wow classic guild and if anyone is planning on playing classic i would be more than happy to have you join it. I’ll miss you all

Hoods Everyone!

Today I am here to talk to you about a game I fell in love with but is probably a bit different from what you are used to. It is a game which has recently got its own guild within CQ. This game is Rocket League….and I suck at it. That’s the great thing about this game. There are many uncompetitive game modes in which the worse you are the funnier it is for you and your teammates, especially when you make silly and unfortunate mistakes.
If unlike me, you have actual talent at the game and are the competitive type there is also a few competitive modes in which you can play 1v1, as well as in teams for 2v2 and 3v3, which all have their own separate and comprehensive ranking systems.

In the simplest of terms, Rocket League is a game in which you are playing soccer…..but with a rocket boosted car. It has an extremely steep learning curve (I have clocked 50 hours of gameplay as of now and I’m still very happy when I hit a stationary ball) but you really notice your improvements and there is no better feeling in gaming.
Rocket League is a game I had always known about but never really gave much time to. That was until I started grinding towards the max cape in RuneScape. I did a lot of AFK skilling in this time and in order to pass the time I needed a new game. It is in this situation where Rocket League is nearly perfect for. In RuneScape you can go AFK for 5 minutes before being kicked to the lobby. In Rocket League an individual match lasts 5 minutes exactly, but it also includes many stoppages for goals in which time you can click to restart your idle timer on RS.

In terms of the new guild within CQ, I feel there is a place for players of all skills and abilities. This is highlighted in the Guild Council, where you have competitive players of a very high standard (Dawn and I) as well as players that just play for fun even when they might be seen as an extreme noob (Wolffi). The guild is also an opportunity to meet people and play games with others of a similar level in order to improve together whilst not feeling inferior or like you are letting anyone down. This environment is perfect if your ultimate aim is to play competitive, and if you just want some friends to play with in a chilled out uncompetitive environment to give you time to improve before taking the leap, Rocket League is the game for you as well.

Rocket league has a professional Esports scene which is growing by the year. The games developer Psyonix was recently bought over by Fortnite developer Epic games. Fortnite has already experienced an explosion of popularity in its professional scene and Epic have plans to expand Rocket League in the same way. With increased Rocket League participation within Clan Quest, the ultimate goal is to get a team involved in this scene.
We would love you to come check out the new guild in the forums or drop a message in the discord if you have any questions about the game. We are also very active within the Rocket League voice chat and you are welcome to join when we are in it. I encourage everyone to join the guild no matter what level you play at in order to socialise with new people and have a laugh at the same time. Who knows, you might discover a hidden talent and fall in love with this game too!

Authors note:

Hello there, and thank you for reading this article. Before you go any further, you should probably know what you’re getting into. The next paragraphs will be a quick preface, followed by the first monthly article geared towards people interested in running their own tabletop games or interested in honing their current storytelling skillset.

I’ve been playing D&D (Dungeons and Dragons) since I could read, and with the recent explosion of popularity that the fifth edition has generated, I’ve seen a lot of new players and dungeon masters. I know everyone needs to start somewhere, so I’ll be writing an article here for Questaholic detailing my advice on running your own games. There will also important lessons I’ve learned during my time running games, as well as observations and general thoughts. Every month I’ll be covering a different topic, but I’ll start with general concepts before branching out into more niche subjects.

Every long-standing dungeon master is going to give you different advice. Every person who runs tabletop games run them differently. I favour story and intrigue focused games, with dice rolls going towards skills such as Perception, Insight, Diplomacy, as well as the various knowledge checks such as History, Arcana, and Religion. I’ve gone several sessions without my players making attack rolls, and I’m fortunate enough that they all enjoy playing that way.

On the other hand, there are DM’s (Dungeon Masters) who prefer creating and running massive dungeons filled with traps and intelligent monsters. Others find pleasure in creating a massive world for their players to explore and investigate. Before you begin designing your campaign, remember the three pillars of tabletop gaming. Exploration, Combat, and Intrigue.

Speak with your players to see what they’re interested in, and evaluate your own personal game preferences before deciding where to focus during the writing and creation period. It could be all three pillars, it could be a mix of two, or it could be a focus on one. The advice below is suited towards story focused games, and should not be treated as gospel, but as advice from a veteran. With that said, I hope this is informative for new DMs.

If you have any questions, please send me a message on the Clan Quest discord, and I’ll help you to the best of my ability. Also, with your blessing, I’ll post any questions I received anonymously at the end of future articles, as well as an answer that should hopefully satisfy a proper solution.

Thanks again for reading the article as well as this long-winded disclaimer, and I wish all of you best of luck in your tabletop games.

Motivation and Conflict - The Foundation of Storytelling

July 2019 027.png

A long time ago, I had the pleasure of working with an exceptionally creative friend. One day, he sat down and remarked something that would change the way how I see the art of storytelling for ages. It was simple, insightful, and eye opening. His idea stuck into my brain, and I hope it will stick into yours.

This is the concept: There is only one story, and humanity endlessly recycles it.

This idea, when boiled down, encompasses almost every piece of surviving classic literature we know of. From the Epic of Gilgamesh to The Odyssey, all stories require conflict, and therefore all stories will follow the same formula. This has been a central part of storytelling theory since the beginning of time, and for almost any story worth telling, you’ll find this concept at the center of the plot, anchoring its premise

The concept boiled down can be expressed like this: “Someone wants something, and they are having a hard time getting it.”

This is broken down into two parts. The first is “motivation”, i.e. “Someone wants something.” There is a person or thing, and it wants to achieve something. A scheming duke might want to become the king of a kingdom, or perhaps there is a thing, say for instance a mysterious shadowy force that wants to corrupt the planet and shroud it in a thousand years of darkness. These are your characters, and they will be the driving force of the plot. What that “someone” and the “thing they want” can be good, evil or somewhere in between, but every major action they perform must be focused towards that thing.

However, there cannot be a story without conflict, so there must be something standing in the way of whatever is wanted. Even books set in periods of relative calm such as Catcher in the Rye still deals with the conflict of characters, rather than the world. For the scheming duke example, this could be an attentive spymaster, always putting the scheming duke in their place. For the second example, it could be seven powerful magic crystals keeping the shadowy entity at bay. Whatever the case may be, It is up to you to decide logical obstacles preventing someone from getting what they want.

This isn’t just limited to the antagonists either, it can apply just as well to the protagonists. The protagonists of the story might want to stop the scheming duke from laying a hand on the royal crown, but the duke is exceedingly capable at covering his tracks and making the protagonists look like fools in the process. Unstoppable heroes are boring heroes. If your players catch on that they can’t lose due to your story setup, they will inevitably try to break it. I’ll speak more on this later in another article. For now, remember protagonists need to face challenges the same way the antagonists, and the challenge can even be the antagonist themselves.

For some real-world examples, we can look at something simple, such as Shakespeare's Romeo and Juliet. What do they want? To get married. What is stopping them? Their families, who do not approve. While it certainly is not the most nuanced of stories, it fulfills the requirements regardless. We can also look at a more recent story for examples. A Man Called Ove, by the Swedish author Sven Svenson also fits this bill. Over the story, Ove, the main character, is an embittered old man, wants but one thing: To kill himself in a dignified manner on his own terms. What keeps getting in his way? His neighbors and acquaintances constantly in need of his help, and Ove’s unbending sense of duty that requires him to render his assistance, as much as he resents them for it.

So how does this work for Dungeons and Dragons? When you write your overarching plot, as well as every subplot within, remember: motivation and conflict. Keep testing your subplots to see if they match with the overarching plot, and whether or not they have proper conflict. Is it interesting? Will the players care enough? When you review your plot and you cannot identify the motivation and conflict of your story, then may need to take a second look what you’ve written.

This advice goes for any piece of creative writing. While it is simple, some authors can forget that motivation and conflict are the basis of any creative piece. This of course, must be followed up with the question of “Why?”. Why do the players care? Why do their character care? Why does the world care? Next article, I’ll be discussing on the necessity of asking “why” to every one of your motivations and plots.

For now, every time you write a new character or plot, ask yourself: “What do they want?”, and “Who or what stands in the way of them getting it?” Then, let your imagination run wild. Keep asking “Why?” until you’ve plugged up every story gap you have, and then start your editing process. It’s not a difficult process, and is easy to keep in mind consistently.

After all, there is only one story.

Gris

Gris is a short, simple puzzle-platformer, the debut creation of Spanish indie developer Nomada Studio, published by Devolver Digital. You play as a girl (Gris herself) who loses both her singing voice and someone vital to her. She falls into an unknown world, and you have to return to her what she lost. There are five levels, representing the five stages of grief – denial, anger, bargaining, depression, and finally acceptance. In each level you gain a new ability through collecting star-like mementos, and again each ability is linked to the theme of the level. Initially, in denial, Gris can barely walk, and weathers harsh sandstorms by weighing herself down. By the end, in acceptance, she regains her singing voice and uses it to bring her world back to life, overcoming the things that have pursued her on her journey.

Some of the usual elements of platformer games are absent: most notably there are no life/death mechanics. The creatures that pursue Gris cannot kill her. Leaping off the edge of the platforms merely returns you to the lower areas of the level, ready to try again. A method of keeping the game low-stakes and exploratory? Or one of the many, many metaphors for recovery that crop up over and over again? The narrative is abstract enough to allow for all sorts of inferences, whether intentional on the part of the developers or otherwise.

Another obviously missing aspect is speech or in-game text. Instead, all the storytelling and puzzle cues come from the visuals and the music – and both are stunning. Nearly every scene is ideally composed for screenshots, the backgrounds and geometric shapes rendered in delicate watercolour, following the ethereal style of creative director/artist Conrad Roset. Your progress through the levels is marked by transitions that add a new colour to the environment. The antagonists morph into being from a black, viscous ink that hunts Gris in various animal forms, threatening to return it to monochrome.

Music provides another key theme: Gris’ loss of her song and journey to recover it chart the course of the story. Berlinist’s original score (available in full on Spotify) carries an emotional heft like I’ve never experienced before in any game. It’s one of the most effective examples of storytelling through music I’ve ever come across, reaching an extraordinarily cathartic climax for such a short game.

Some criticism of Gris has centred on its simplicity – how, in taking away some of the usual components of a platformer, there isn’t a great deal left. And this is true to an extent. Gris is playable in a few hours and there are no branching choices, no divergences in the narrative or alternative endings. The puzzles are simple and intuitive, and as you cannot die – you can’t lose - the stakes are low. But the trade-off is you have time to truly immerse yourself in this melancholic and beautiful little world. For the emotional impact to be felt, you need to have the time to connect with the concepts being explored, and Gris allows this in bucketloads.

It’s an elegant, subtle exploration of loss and grief. If the style connects with you, it is full of rich abstract details that allow for all sorts of inferences and personal conclusions. I’ve seen some debate about whether video games can count as art. Art is meant to move you, to make you feel something surprising. Over the course of one short evening Gris drew me completely into its world and moved me to tears at its soaring conclusion. What is that if not art?

Gris was released in December 2018 and is available on Steam and through the Nintendo Switch E-Shop.

Welcome back, noobs! This month we’ve had only 1 nomination: The Rocket League Guild Council.

I wish to make a group nomination.

This group of people have taken into their hands the management of a brand new guild, which alone can prove to be a basic and easy task. But more than just having a fancy red colour, they have committed to acquiring the role of leaders, teachers and students at the same time. They have managed to found the first non-rs guild and I can already see they will not stop there. That's my reason to nominate the current Rocket League Guild Council. Thank you, lads, keep making the clan an awesome place.

Even if there is only one nomination, the judges decide if the nomination is valid and the candidate is fit for the award. Guess what:

Congratulations!
